Ultrasound of the urinary system in animals

To determine the health of the retroperitoneal space (urinary system), our veterinarians in Los Angeles perform ultrasounds.

For this diagnostic procedure, we have the high-precision Z.ONE machine with zone scanning technology. It allows the ultrasound technician to view the bladder, kidneys, and ureters. Visualization is quick and without any harm to the patient.

    Features of veterinary bladder ultrasound

A pet's bladder can be subject to a variety of conditions. The most common are disorders such as inflammation of the bladder (cystitis), stones in the urinary system (urolithiasis), all kinds of neoplasms (polyps, cysts, tumors).

Trauma to the bladder may also occur. Ultrasound examination helps to detect these health problems of the animal. For the diagnostic result to be correct, the pet's bladder must be moderately full.

Veterinary Hospital Animal Clinic International specialists recommend a starvation diet. It's best not to feed your large-breed pet for 8 to 12 hours. If your cat or dog is a small breed, a 6-hour fast is sufficient. An ultrasound of the urinary system is indicated if there are signs such as:

    • Urinary incontinence.
    • Painful or abnormally frequent urination.
    • Urine of an unnatural color, with sediment or an admixture of blood.

Before the procedure, our ultrasound technician will carefully remove the hair in the scanning area. The patient will be in a supine position, which will provide a high-quality and informative image.

Ultrasound kidney animals: the possibility of research

Performance of ultrasound examination of the kidneys allows us to understand the location of the organs, to identify abnormalities in size, configuration and development, to detect stones, to diagnose kidney infarction, nephrosclerosis, pyelonephritis and other diseases.

    Ureteral ultrasound in animals

In our veterinary clinic an ultrasound examination of these paired tubular organs is performed to check this area of the body for the following pathologies:

    • Obstruction by a urolith or neoplasm.
    • Cystic enlargement of the distal section.
    • Abnormal development of the ureter.
    • Narrowing or expansion of the ureter.

Ureters are diagnosed in a complex with bladder and kidneys. It is recommended to make an appointment for the procedure beforehand. This can be done online or by phone.
