Ultrasound of the abdominal cavity in animals

Abdominal ultrasound (sonography) is a non-invasive and completely painless instrumental diagnostic option. It allows our veterinarians in Los Angeles to repeatedly perform basic and clarifying examinations without radiation exposure to the animal.

Our ultrasound machine, the Z.ONE, has a convex transducer. It allows the veterinarian ultrasound technician to quickly get reliable visual information about the condition of the liver, gastrointestinal tract, gallbladder and ducts, pancreas and spleen.

    Abdominal examination with ultrasound

The examination is safe and information- is rich. By performing it, our Veterinary Hospital Animal Clinic International specialists can determine the presence of the following abnormalities

    • Congenital abnormalities.
    • Vascular abnormality.
    • Inflammation or abscess of an internal organ.
    • A neoplasm.
    • Gastrointestinal obstruction.
    • Organ damage due to trauma.
    • Complication after surgery.

An abdominal ultrasound provides the veterinarian with information about the configuration of the internal organs, their health status and function. During the examination, the area may be checked for foreign bodies. Ultrasound can distinguish between free fluid and gas in the abdomen.

Symptoms indicating the need for an ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasonography is indicated for animals that react painfully to a guardian's touching of the abdomen. The pet should also be examined if it has:

    • Vomiting.
    • Poisoning.
    • Foreign object in the gastrointestinal tract.
    • Enlarged abdomen.
    • Disturbed defecation.
    • Absent or increased appetite.

Do not ignore changes in behavior or deteriorating health of the pet. Timely ultrasound will help to quickly normalize the abdominal organs and return the pet to a full life.

Preparing your pet for an abdominal ultrasound

In order for the data obtained to be correct, before the ultrasound, it is important to starve a diet: 6 hours - for cats and 10 hours - for dogs. You can offer your pet clean water.

Preparation will continue already in the veterinary clinic. We would like to warn you: to perform the diagnosis, the ultrasound technician will shave the hair from the abdominal wall with a special machine. He will lay the animal on its side and apply an acoustic gel. We recommend that you make an appointment in advance for the examination.
