    Pelvic ultrasound in females

State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment housed at Veterinary Hospital Animal Clinic International allows our veterinarians to detect uterine abnormalities. Ultrasounds should be performed on females if symptoms such as:

    • Pus and bloody discharge from the vulva.
    • Visibly rounded abdomen.
    • Lack of desire to eat.
    • Lethargy and lack of mobility.
    • Frequent visits to the toilet to urinate.
    • Strong thirst.

If the animal's sexual cycle was planned with the use of contraceptives, it is obligatory to perform an ultrasound examination. This diagnostic method is necessary as a preventive measure, as well as to check for complications after delivery.

The quality of imaging of the uterus depends on the level of preparedness of the female. The guardian should take care that the bladder of the fostered female is moderately full and the rectum is empty.

    Ultrasound diagnosis of the ovaries

In conjunction with the uterus, the ovaries are also examined. But to perform an ultrasound of this important element of the female reproductive system, there may also be separate reasons:

    • Abnormal discharge from the vagina.
    • Uterine bleeding that goes against the cycle.
    • Tumor in the abdominal and pelvic cavities.
    • Absence of offspring after mating.
    • Disruption of sexual behavior.
    • Detected atypical cells in genital smears and urine - after laboratory diagnosis.
    • Pathologies of the uterus.
    • Trauma to this area.

It is through a pelvic ultrasound that the new guardian of a cat or dog taken from a shelter can find out if the pet has had its uterus and ovaries removed. Studies of these parts of the body are performed through the outer abdominal wall, by placing a probe on the female's abdomen.
