Laparoscopy - inspection of the abdomen with video equipment
If the x-rays and ultrasounds performed were not informative enough, our veterinarian in Los Angeles will schedule a laparoscopy. This is a minimally invasive surgery in which tiny diagnostic equipment is inserted into tiny holes made in the anterior abdominal wall.
Laparoscopic diagnosis gives our veterinarians the ability to assess the condition of the organs and their tissues as accurately as possible. If a significant tumor is detected, an endoscopic examination allows us to see if surgery can be performed. This is possible by taking a puncture of the modified tissue.
What does the pet's guardian need to know about laparoscopy?
At Veterinary Hospital Animal Clinic International, when performing a laparoscopy on an animal, veterinarians follow all necessary requirements to ensure that the surgical procedure is safe:
- A preliminary diagnosis is performed.
- Adhere to the rules of asepsis and antisepsis.
- Prepare the patient for the introduction of general anesthesia.
The procedure is performed as follows: when the patient falls asleep the surgeon makes a small incision near his navel. He then lifts the abdominal wall, inserts a Veresch needle and attaches a hose that carries carbon dioxide into the abdominal cavity.
A trocar is inserted through which a rigid endoscope is inserted. The image it sends in magnified form to the monitor allows the veterinarian to assess the condition of the abdominal organs in real time. If a more informative examination and palpation is needed, an auxiliary trocar or palpatory probe is used.
