Cystoscopy — Instrumental Diagnosis of the Urinary Bladder

Cystoscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure performed using veterinary endoscopic equipment. It provides a complete view of the urethra, its openings, the internal bladder cavity, and the ureteral openings.

    Indications for Cystoscopy

A veterinarian prescribes cystoscopy after a standard physical examination and consultation with the pet's guardian. The procedure is necessary in cases such as:

    • Blood in the urine
    • Chronic cystitis
    • Suspected uroliths (bladder stones)
    • Urination disorders (false urges, incontinence)
    • Pathological changes in the urinary system detected via ultrasound

This endoscopic examination delivers the most accurate information about the bladder and urethra to enable correct treatment and improve the animal's quality of life.

Cystoscopy for Pets in Los Angeles: Diagnostic Features

At Veterinary Hospital Animal Clinic International, our specialists perform cystoscopy on cats and dogs under general anesthesia. The type of procedure is selected based on the animal’s sex and size:

    • Via the urethra:
The urethra of female cats and dogs, as well as male cats with perineal urethrostomy, is examined using a rigid endoscope. The patient lies in a supine position. The examination begins with the vaginal opening (for females), followed by inspection of the urethral walls, the bladder sphincter, and finally the bladder cavity. If abnormalities are found, tissue samples are collected for laboratory analysis.
    • Via the abdominal wall:
This method is indicated for male animals weighing more than 3 kg. A flexible video endoscope with a 2.5 mm diameter is used. The patient lies on their back. A small incision is made in the abdominal wall, through which the bladder is accessed and temporarily sutured. The bladder wall is then incised, and a tiny video camera is inserted. The procedure concludes with suturing.

Both types of cystoscopy are performed under general anesthesia.
