Colposcopy — Examination of the Female Reproductive System

Colposcopy (vaginoscopy) is performed on female animals to assess the condition of the reproductive organs. This procedure involves an endoscopic examination of the vagina and part of the cervix.

    Diagnostic Capabilities of Colposcopy

Colposcopy allows veterinarians at our Los Angeles clinic to identify any growths, inflammation, or other lesions on the mucous membrane. The diagnostic device (a colposcope — a type of endoscope) is equipped with binocular optics, providing a highly detailed, 30x magnified image.

Using the colposcope and additional instruments, our specialists can also perform targeted biopsies of abnormal areas for morphological analysis and accurate diagnosis.

    Indications for Colposcopy in Animals

Dogs and cats require vaginoscopy if prescribed by a veterinarian. Guardians should initiate a veterinary visit if they notice abnormalities in the pet’s genital area. Indications for colposcopy include:

    • Suspected foreign body
    • Pus or other abnormal vaginal discharge
    • Previously identified tumor

Colposcopy is also valuable in pre-pregnancy evaluations. If a disease is detected, appropriate treatment is prescribed, which may include endoscopic surgery — a minimally invasive procedure that is painless for the patient due to anesthesia. Colposcopy can also be used to monitor the course of treatment and make necessary adjustments.
